Enemy at the gate

Another glorious day in paradise, one where more time was put into clearing the perimeter of bracken and gorse. Time out was taken to have a very entertaining lunch with the Stable Sprite and his merry band. The fayre was simple and pork based. Rock HQ sausages, Apple and sage burgers and sun dried tomato, red pepper and oregano pork burgers. These went down very well which is hardly a surprise as last night the quality of our sausage tempted Kay a vegetarian to dodge the salad and try one. When Stable Sprites wife announced that she preferred my sausage to her husbands it just confirmed how good ours are. Double entendres aside up on the hill we are locked in a titanic struggle, not only with the green menace but the red one, foxes.
Last week two ducks and and one hen disappeared, and as there are many young cubs to be fed this time of year, as well as lone males we are bracing ourselves for more losses. The poultry is all housed in pretty secure accommodation under the glare of the antiaircraft lights at night, day time we are keeping most of them within the perimeter. Wanderlust overtakes the braver more agile ones, their defiance of the boundary and stay in sight rule is often their greatest and last mistake. I did find evidence of our enemy today, one that had fallen by the gate. Presumably last summer for reasons unknown it curled up in the thickest of the bracken and died. One thing we know for certain it would not have died of starvation!
The observant amongst you might have noticed the Friends Down Under Link in the margin. We have for a while been in touch with some Aussie smallholders and they have a website. Think TFTR but with Kangaroos, Koalas and smallholders with a higher level of competence than you find here. Have a look and a smile.
